International telephone calls from Japan could be made directly from a public phone marked for international calls. Although the number of public phones has been decreasing recently, they are still found at airports, hotels, and other key facilities.
To make international calls from Japan, dial “+(push 0 long)” or “010” followed by the country code.
Dial: [010] or [+] – [Country Code] – phone number
*Remove the first 0 of the phone number, if there is one.
[Country Codes]
U.S.A.: 1
Korea: 82
China: 86
Taiwan: 886
Hong Kong: 852
International calls from mobile phones are generally high in cost, making calls with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or with prepaid cards is recommended.
*Note that making landline calls requires an international access number. Please contact the owner of the landline phone for the international access number. (When making international calls from the hotel room, see the receptionist for assistance.)
Phone calls may also be made from public phones with 10 Yen and 100 Yen coins. Telephone cards (prepaid cards exclusively for public phones) are also available.
To make a call, lift the receiver, insert the coin or a telephone card in the designated slot, then dial the telephone number.
*Emergency calls may be made from the public phones uncharged.
Call 110 for Incidents or Accidents
Call 119 for Fire or Ambulance
If the SIM card supports voice calls, calls from the smartphone may be made. There are various plans available, so find the one that suits your needs.
