Autumn scenery in Aichi: 2026 Korankei Autumn Leaves Festival

Japan is famous for its beautiful autumn leaves, which attract visitors from all over the world every year. As the autumn foliage season approaches once again, it’s the perfect time to plan a trip to experience Japan’s stunning fall colors.
One of the Tokai region’s best-known destinations for autumn foliage is Korankei, located in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture.
Korankei has a history dating back nearly 400 years and is now known throughout Japan as a popular spot for autumn leaves. What makes it especially unique is the story behind its beautiful scenery. It is said that in 1634, a Buddhist monk named San’ei of Kōjakuji Temple began planting maple trees in the area. Since then, local residents have continued planting trees over the generations, creating the beautiful landscape visitors can enjoy today.
Every November, when the autumn colors are at their best, the Korankei Maple Festival is held, showcasing the vibrant reds and golds of approximately 3,000 maple trees.
During the festival, the trees are illuminated at night, creating a breathtaking and almost magical atmosphere. The scenery looks completely different during the day and after dark, making Korankei a wonderful destination to enjoy throughout the day.
There are also plenty of food stalls where visitors can sample local specialties and experience Japanese festival food. Some of the most popular choices include Gohei-mochi (grilled rice cakes coated in a savory-sweet miso sauce), charcoal-grilled sausages from ZiZi Kobo, salt-grilled sweetfish (ayu).Cute, yummy, and totally Instagram-worthy! Don’t miss the anko dango, a favorite among young people!
