Atami City is located in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture. The city is famous for Atami Onsen, one of the greatest hot springs in Japan, which attracts a large number of visitors on weekends. An overflowing abundance of hot spring water means that not only are there many hot spring facilities and footbaths throughout the city, but while enjoying a stroll you will come across steam rising here and there. Legend has it that after Tokugawa Ieyasu visited the curative hot spring, he commanded that the particularly sublime spring water be brought to Edo Castle. It remains a favorite of celebrities to this day.
