About Sakai

Sakai City is located in the northern part of the Fukui Prefecture. The western part of the city faces Sea of Japan and is famous for the tourist spot “Tojinbo Cliffs”, the dramatic stone cliffs along the Sea of Japan. At Mikuni Onsen, enjoy seafood from Sea of Japan and mineral-rich high-salinity onsen [hot springs]. Maruoka Castle, one of the 12 castles in Japan with a surviving castle tower built before the Edo Era, is another iconic tourist attraction in Sakai City.


Getting there and around

by Train

From JR Nagoya Station: take the JR Hokuriku Line “Limited Express Shirasagi” to Fukui Station.
From JR Nagoya Station: take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen [Bullet Train] to Maibara Station and transfer to the JR Hokuriku Line “Limited Express Shirasagi” to Fukui Station.

From JR Tokyo Station: take the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen [Bullet Train] directly to Fukui Station.
From JR Tokyo Station: take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen [Bullet Train] to Maibara, and transfer to JR Hokuriku Line “Limited Express Shirasagi” to Fukui Station.

From Osaka and Kyoto: take the JR Hokuriku Line “Thunderbird Limited Express” directly to Fukui Station.

From Fukui Statin: take HAPI-LINE FUKUI to Maruoka Station.

→For Mikuni Station:
From Fukui Station: take Echizen Railway Mikuni Awara Line to Mikuni Station.

Points of Interest

Sakai City is home to numerous sightseeing spots starting with Tojinbo Cliffs. The sights evolve seasonally. In summer, enjoy swimming and fireworks festival at Mikuni Sunset Beach. In winter, enjoy the iconic seafood of Fukui, "Echizen crab", along with other fresh seafood of Mikuni Port.
