The Osu Summer Festival is one of Nagoya’s most popular summer events, held annually in the historic Osu district of Aichi. Centered around Osu Kannon Temple and the vibrant Osu Shopping Street, the festival offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience traditional Japanese culture, local performances, and exciting summer festivities.
Known as one of Nagoya’s most lively neighborhoods, Osu combines century-old history with modern pop culture. During the festival, the entire district transforms into a colorful celebration filled with music, dance, street performances, and local food stalls. Thousands of visitors from across Japan and around the world gather to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Osu is famous for its blend of historic temples, traditional shopping streets, anime and gaming stores, and multicultural influences. This distinctive character makes the Osu Summer Festival unlike any other in Japan.
Throughout the event, visitors can enjoy a variety of performances, including traditional taiko drum shows, Awa Odori dances, Eisa performances from Okinawa, live entertainment, and community parades. The festival is also known for its international atmosphere, reflecting Osu’s reputation as one of Nagoya’s cultural hubs.
One of the highlights of the festival is the grand Bon Odori dance gathering, where locals and visitors dance together in celebration of summer. The festival concludes with a spectacular display of Tezutsu Hanabi (traditional hand-held fireworks), a centuries-old firework tradition originating in the Tokai region. The dramatic columns of sparks and flames create a breathtaking spectacle that offers an unforgettable glimpse into Japan’s unique firework culture.
Visitors can also explore the many shops, cafes, and street food vendors throughout Osu, making it an ideal destination for those seeking history, culture, shopping, and local cuisine all in one place.
