Nagaragawa Ukai (traditional cormorant fishing), which dates back more than 1,300 years, takes place again in 2026 on the Nagara River in Gifu City. Held each year from May 11 to October 15, this traditional event is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. From a sightseeing boat, visitors can watch up close as usho (imperial cormorant fishing masters) and their cormorants work together to catch ayu (sweetfish) by the light of blazing kagaribi (fishing bonfires) reflected on the river.
As your boat moves out onto the river, bright firelight appears against the darkness, and the skilled movements of the usho handling their birds unfold right before your eyes. This atmospheric tradition, said to have been admired by historical figures such as Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu, offers more than a glimpse of an old performing art. It is also a vivid way to experience the culture of Gifu, shaped in close relationship with nature. Feeling the evening breeze from the boat, visitors can take in both the dynamic fishing technique and the long-inherited spirit of coexistence that continues to define this tradition.
