Special Exhibition “Brothers in Arms!” Opens in Nagoya City: A Closer Look at the Legacy of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s Brother Hidenaga

A special exhibition titled “NHK Taiga Drama Special Exhibition: BROTHERS IN ARMS!” takes place at the Tokugawa Art Museum and the Hosa Library in Nagoya City, Aichi, in conjunction with NHK’s 2026 Taiga drama (a long-running annual historical TV drama series in Japan). Through rare cultural assets, the exhibition explores the lives of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who achieved the unification of Japan, and his younger brother Hidenaga, who supported him throughout his rise as his “strongest aide.”

The bond between two brothers who shaped history, with a spotlight on Hidenaga

This exhibition focuses on Toyotomi Hidenaga, a master negotiator who supported the Toyotomi clan during the Sengoku period (Japan’s age of warring states) through exceptional diplomatic and administrative skill. On display are items connected to Hidenaga that have rarely been highlighted before, including his portrait, handwritten letters, and the only tea caddy identified as having been used by him.

Also featured are around 140 materials, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties that symbolize the era the brothers lived through, such as the famed sword the meibutsu Nansen-Ichimonji from the Tokugawa Art Museum’s renowned sword collection, and a helmet used by Todo Takatora, one of Hideyoshi’s retainers. In addition, 50 items will be shown exclusively at the Nagoya venue. The exhibition is divided into two periods, with some displays rotated between the first and second half.
