Gifu Grand Hotel is a resort hotel located at the foot of Mt. Kinka (Kinkazan) featuring Gifu Castle on the summit, and the views of the abundant nature of the clear Nagara River in front of the hotel. This hotel is great to enjoy the famous Nagara River cormorant fishing and is recommended for the whole family.
Gifu Grand Hotel is accommodated with both Western-style and Japanese-style guest rooms. Staying in the Japanese-style rooms with the flat tatami mats will assure a comfortable stay, even when traveling with infant or toddler. The flat tatami mats on the floor will keep away the worries about small guests from falling off the bed and being free to crawl around as much as they want in the room. In case of any difficulties with taking a bath in a large public bath, rooms with private bathtubs with windows are also available. The baby seats are available for changing diapers in the hotel.
Total of three restaurants in the Gifu Grand Hotel serves Japanese, French, and Chinese cuisine, and all restaurants also have menu for children. At the French Restaurant "Castle", enjoy French cuisine made with local food in a superb location with stunning views of Gifu Castle, Nagara River and the city of Gifu. In the Chinese Restaurant "Kasen”, authentic Chinese cuisine satisfies the whole family. Experience the excellent kaiseki cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere with Japanese special touches at the "Kissho" and "Kissho Robata Japanese Restaurant".
The bakery in Lounge Kirara is famous for the limited 200 a day "Anpan". Try this classic Japanese pastry, with red bean paste wrapped inside. In the open-air lounge, treat yourself to homemade cakes and cookies with aromatic coffee.
Gifu Grand Hotel is also a place to enjoy onsen [hot springs]. The large public bathing area "Hitotsuba" includes the open-air Nagaragawa Onsen [hot springs], an herbal bath with healing aroma, a white-water jacuzzi, a plain water bath and a sauna. The rich in iron, reddish-brown Nagaragawa Onsen [hot spring], is selected as one of the "The top 100 Japan's hot spring resorts by the travel industry professionals".
Ukai [cormorant fishing] has 1,300 years of history and is the traditional fishing method using "U" [Japanese Cormorant] to catch "ayu" [sweet fish] and other river fishes. On the Nagara River, the ukai season starts from May 11th and takes place every night until October 15th, at the outset of the ayu [sweet fish] fishing season, except for the day of the harvest moon or when the water level rises.
Watch ukai either from ashore or on a cormorant boat to closely observe the skillful techniques of the Usho [Cormorant Fishing Master] and the U [Cormorants] catching fishes.
The surrounding scenery seen from the boat is distinctively beautiful and gives you an extraordinary experience to take in.
