The Toyohashi Gion Festival 2026, held in Toyohashi City, Aichi, is one of the most iconic summer traditions in the eastern Mikawa region of Japan. It is best known for its dramatic tezutsu hanabi (handheld fireworks), a rare and powerful ritual where participants carry exploding fire cylinders by hand.
Centered around Yoshida Shrine, this century-old festival is dedicated to prayers for safety, prosperity, and community harmony. Even among the spiritual and intense fire festivals in Japan, it’s one of the most unique.
The highlight of the festival is the handheld fireworks ritual, in which local participants ignite bamboo tubes packed with gunpowder. As the fireworks erupt directly from their hands, towering columns of fire and sparks light up the night sky, drawing in participants with tension and intensity.
In addition to this spectacular ritual, the festival includes traditional shrine processions and cultural performances, bringing the entire community together in celebration of summer.
On the night of the festival, the area around Yoshida Shrine is enveloped in flames and smoke, creating an extraordinary scene. Unlike typical fireworks displays viewed from a distance, the Toyohashi Gion Festival allows spectators to witness the action at close range. The powerful bursts of fire, smoke, and sound create an intense and unforgettable atmosphere. This rare proximity makes the festival especially appealing to international visitors seeking authentic and immersive cultural experiences in Japan.
