The Nagoya Horikawa Festival 2026 will take place along the Horikawa River in central Nagoya, Aichi. This early-summer event is a seasonal highlight that brings together lantern-lit boats, traditional performing arts, and atmospheric nighttime illuminations along one of the city’s most historic waterways. It offers a rare opportunity to experience the nostalgic charm of Nagoya, the City of Water, where river culture and festival traditions blend into a uniquely atmospheric scene, drawing in international visitors.
The Horikawa River has supported commerce and daily life in Nagoya since the Edo period (1603-1869), serving as a vital waterway for transportation and cultural exchange. The Nagoya Horikawa Festival celebrates this legacy as a modern urban festival, allowing visitors to rediscover the city’s historical relationship with its rivers.
During the festival, beautifully decorated lantern boats glide slowly along the water, creating a glowing procession across the river. Visitors can enjoy performances of traditional Japanese taiko drumming, stage presentations of local performing arts, and a variety of food stalls offering regional specialties.
As night falls, lantern lights stretch along the water, reflecting off the river surface and illuminating historic buildings nearby. The result enchanting atmosphere that makes it hard to believe that you’re in the heart of the city. After rain, the cobblestone paths and shimmering reflections on the water create especially photogenic scenes, often described as a quintessential image of a Japanese summer night.
The festival area is also conveniently located near several of Nagoya’s major cultural landmarks, such as Atsuta Shrine, Shikemichi DIstrict, and Nagoya Castle. making it easy to combine sightseeing with the event.
